When you lose sight of what makes you happy, when you forget what it was all about: it's time for a break. To reflect on yourself. On what you want to do. On the person you really are. On what you can really do. And want to do. A break to be yourself again.
That's what Ami Warning is all about on "Auszeit", her fourth album and the second in German, after "Momentan" released in 2019 and the mixtape "Kurz vorm Ende der Welt" from 2022. Ami Warning - with a name like that, you can only achieve great things. Great things that are at the same time completely at peace with themselves. It suits Ami, who tells ten stories of struggle, doubt, breaking out, arriving, self-empowerment, courage, openness, the joy of trying things out and making peace with yourself in ten songs in a relaxed, focused and entirely her own style.
For example, there is "Liebe is laut", a collaboration with Mola, with whom Ami Warning not only shares her Munich origins, but also the talent to create entire vignettes full of tension in just a few words and to tell the topic of relationships - and their end - in a new and surprising way. Including a music video that shows the power of joie de vivre and friendship in warm colors, even in the coldest of times. On the other hand, she sings about getting back up again after a breakup on "war dabei" with another featured guest with a connection to Munich, the rapper Fatoni.
“Rastlos” is completely different, dealing with the danger of always chasing the next goal and forgetting how to take a break. Ami celebrates how taking a break works on the delicate, minimalist opener “Meer will ich”, which combines spoken elements with her deep, velvety-warm singing voice. Standing up and immediately handing out likes, self-optimization and fear of the future: Ami sings about feelings that everyone knows. And in doing so, creates a touching intimacy between herself and her listeners.
She also creates this intimacy in her live shows with a full band – she is on lead guitar, there is also a guitarist, bassist, drummer and keyboard. This is due to her deeply relaxed sound, somewhere between singer-songwriter in German and hip hop beats, but also because she lets everything flow unadulterated into her lyrics and finished songs, including the scratchiness of her voice. But maybe it also has something to do with her biography: "I was never really drawn to the stage," says Ami, "I thought for a long time that it wasn't my thing." But music has always been a part of her life: her father is a reggae musician with roots in the Caribbean. "Maybe that plays a part too," she says. Always in the audience at her father's concerts, she eventually feels like picking up the guitar herself and writing songs. And maybe even performing in front of an audience at some point.
That was a few years ago now. And also a few rounds of self-doubt, searching and self-discovery. The result of this search and this self-confident arrival is the title song "Auszeit": with a music video that she shot herself with a camcorder while on vacation in Aruba, it is a hymn to slowing down sometimes, listening to your own gut feeling and allowing yourself not only to fight, but also to regain strength.
With "Auszeit" Ami Warning is at our side like a wise friend and advisor. Someone who has been through all of this herself and now speaks without shame and with a lot of heart about life, real life without filters or post-production. And in the process manages to create a soundtrack that brings us back from our overexcited, stress-ridden, unsettling times. Into the now. Into life. Into our time out.
