Bad Omens are already being hailed as one of modern rock's most exciting phenomena of recent years, and being invited to play main support for another rock titan like Bring Me The Horizon only reinforces that claim.
The band recently released the highly anticipated music video for their hit “Just Pretend” (via Sumerian Records). The music video was directed by Erik Rojas (Chase Atlantic, Jessie J, Waterparks) and is based on a story written by singer Noah Sebastian. The track itself has taken on a life of its own, reaching #1 at Active Rock Radio, while currently sitting in the Top 10 at Alt Radio, having garnered over 135 million streams and counting.
The band also recently unveiled their new comic book series, Concrete Jungle (via Sumerian Comics). Written by Noah Sebastian and Kevin Roditeli (Freak Show) and illustrated by Nicola Izzo, the four-part monthly series will be available in stores September 6.
Bad Omens break through boundaries, only to nip conventions in the bud in the end. The quartet - Noah Sebastian (vocals), Joakim "Jolly" Karlsson (guitar), Nick Ruffilo (bass) and Nick Folio (drums) - captivates with ghostly atmosphere, distinctive hooks and the tingling of sensual harmonies in high registers, which are underlined by a cinematic production. With more than 250 million streams worldwide and much acclaim, the band presents an uncompromising and undeniable vision on their third album "THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND" (Sumerian Records).
"Recording this album changed us as songwriters and musicians. In many ways, I feel like it freed me as an artist because every decision I made during the writing process was for myself, without fear of anyone else's expectations of how our third album should sound. Be it our fans or our record label."
However, they have always practiced this level of magic…
Their 2016 self-titled debut, Bad Omens, spawned fan favorites like "Glass Houses" and "The Worst In Me," which surpassed 38 million Spotify streams. 2019's Finding God Before God Finds Me spawned "Dethrone" (27 million Spotify streams) and "Careful What You Wish For." Along the way, they toured with numerous big-name acts and received plenty of praise from tastemakers.
After their first headline tour was canceled halfway through at the height of the global pandemic, the band found themselves back home in Los Angeles with plenty of time on their hands. There they recorded and channeled a different palette of unexpected inspirations. Channeling what the frontman sometimes describes as a "cursive sound," they embraced newfound confidence and boundlessly loose creativity. In the studio, anything went, and all "rules" were broken. Noah and Jolly wrote, produced and engineered the music themselves, while GRAMMY® Award-nominated producer and songwriter Zakk Cervini (Blink-182, Poppy, Pale Waves & Polyphia) lent his talents to mix and master. To challenge himself, Noah decided to "make a track using samples of items around the house, none of which were musical instruments."
This eventually became the framework for the first single, "THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND." Claps break the icy soundscape as his voice expands from a breathy moan to an imploring and stirring hook, and from a whisper to the seductive chant, "It wasn't hard to realize. Love is the death of peace of mind." He culminates in a climactic scream lifted by a distorted crunch.
"The whole record is about the loss of peace of mind," he explains. "The lyrics of the title track are a little more specific in terms of the conflict at the heart of something more intimate and personal."
By saying it out loud, Bad Omens offer a layer of comfort and empathy, with a dark veil. At the same time, they give rock music a new, sexy form on "THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND".
"Sonically, we want to do something that you can't be too late or too early for," he says. "You can't cheat your way to the last act. You have to get on the ride and see it through to the end. The songs are meant to be heard from start to finish. We want you to take the whole journey with us."
