'Future Ghosts' is perhaps a bit more melancholic than its two predecessors, but the songs come across confidently and with a sense of hope and curiosity that keeps the artist and the listeners on the edge of their seats.
American singer-songwriter Brookln Dekker, better known by his stage name Dekker, has a steadily growing global audience, with international radio presence and over 70 million streams. After releasing his debut album 'Slow Reveal: Chapter One' in 2020 and 'I Won't Be Your Foe' in 2022, Dekker returns in 2024 with 'Future Ghosts'.
Dekker on "Future Ghosts": "After completing 'I Won't Be Your Foe' in 2021, I knew I had achieved something special. 'I Won't Be Your Foe' was an attempt to use my songs to create a picture of how I wanted to be and how things should feel during a difficult phase. For the new album 'Future Ghosts', it was now time to write songs that reflect how I really feel and what is going on with me.
As the focus on Covid began to fade, various health scares and dire diagnoses in my extended family took its place. Things were going well as an artist, with streaming numbers and ticket sales steadily increasing, but I was struggling a little more than usual in my personal life. This imbalance brought with it fears about health and a premonition of mortality. I started writing this album when my daughter asked me, "What happens to us when we die?" I told her I didn't know for sure and that we should go and find an answer together. It was then that we wrote the album's title track 'Future Ghosts' together. Somehow I knew I had just hit the tone for the album: thoughtful, melancholic, not overly indulgent, and with a slightly more alive feel than my previous work.
I continued writing and recorded my first demos, which led to the first session with my partner Stefan Wittich (drummer and co-producer) in his Berlin studio in spring 2022. When we recorded the drums, we only worked with four microphones. It was exciting to limit ourselves in this way and experiment with sounds. While I tried out different guitars and recording techniques, Stefan edited the drum tracks and added various percussive elements. I am an impatient writer. I don't like to dwell on details and don't like to wait during the creative process. However, many of the steps on this album were separated by long periods of several months - for very human reasons. Today I see that this time did the album good and helped it feel as alive as I had hoped. These songs are about pain, loss and disorientation, but that is not the intended message or mood. The album is about life and its many mysteries. It's about getting through difficult times and learning that you can get through them. In these songs you also find a kind of faith and a kind of love that makes you do strange things. Zach Hanson (Bon Iver, The Staves, Whitney) put the finishing touches on the record by mixing and mastering it in his wonderful way."
