The railway carriages in the "Miniature Wonderland" meander for miles through blooming landscapes and rocky mountain gorges. By creating this magical model universe, twin brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun have fulfilled their childhood dream of the largest model railway in the world. The exhibition, which opened in Hamburg's Speicherstadt in 2001, now stretches from the Elbphilharmonie to the Antarctic and, with more than 1.5 million visitors a year, is one of the biggest crowd pullers in all of Europe.
"Wonderland" brings this fabulous dream world to the big screen for the first time as a documentary event with elaborate Cinemascope footage. The Braun brothers lead cinema-goers as animated miniature figures through their magical landscape, which always has amazing discoveries in store for young and old. With previously unpublished archive material, the film takes a look back to the Brauns' childhood and shows their early fascination with recreating classic everyday situations with great attention to detail. The visual adventure also takes the audience to South America to the Martinez family of model makers, who enrich the "Miniature Wonderland" with Rio de Janeiro and the wild, unspoilt Patagonia with passionate craftsmanship. Little by little, the smallest world in the world comes to life, in which everything seems possible.
