She is the young, cheeky voice in the German comedy scene. Whether stand-up, satirical show on TV, on tour or in a podcast with her own husband - Hazel Brugger's humor can be experienced in many ways.
Hazel Brugger was born in 1993 in San Diego, California, but grew up mostly near Zurich. Even in her early appearances on poetry slam stages, the comedian gave personal insights into her life: her mother is a teacher from Cologne, her father is a neuropsychologist with a doctorate from Zurich. Completed by two older brothers, this family constellation provides enough material for plenty of laughs.
Brugger realized early on that after finishing school, she was less drawn to the lecture hall studying literature and philosophy than to the comedy stage. Poetry slams gave her and many other talents the opportunity to try out a mix of literature, poetry and comedy. She regularly attended these events as a guest in the audience and was already on stage herself at the age of 17.
Comedy instead of studying
Hazel gave up her studies in favor of her artistic career and devoted herself entirely to comedy. No stage is safe from the "evilest woman in Switzerland" and word of her talent quickly spreads in the scene. Anyone who didn't manage to get a ticket for Hazel Brugger's live performances at the poetry slam back then could also experience her dry and sometimes caustic sense of humor from 2013 to 2017 in various columns for the "TagesWoche", the publishing house "Hochparterre" and "Das Magazin".
In 2013, the popular artist and columnist won the Swiss Poetry Slam championship and is also increasingly present in German comedy shows and on stages. As a presenter, she regularly hosted a live talk at the Theater Neumarkt in Zurich in 2015. The first Hazel Brugger show started in 2015 under the title "Hazel Brugger happens".
Since 2016, German television viewers have regularly seen what happens when the clever comedienne interviews celebrities and politicians. As a field reporter for the satirical "heute-show" on ZDF or in guest appearances on the show "Die Anstalt", the young artist impresses with her cheeky manner.
From cheeky newcomer to adult artist
In 2017, Hazel Brugger received the German Comedy Award as “Best Newcomer”, and in 2022 she won it as “Best Comedian”. Fans can practically watch her grow up.
Brugger is maturing into a serious artist across all media, something her audience can experience off the stage on her own YouTube channel or in her podcast. On YouTube, she produces the series "Deutschland Was Geht" (Germany What's Going On) together with her husband Thomas Spitzer, in which various comedy greats make guest appearances. The series will be continued under the name "Europa Was Geht".
In Hazel Brugger's own podcast "Nur Heirat", fans can find out what a young married couple is up to in their everyday lives, even outside of a live tour. The challenges that arise with the two artists' first child are discussed and talked about in a funny, dry and fairly honest way.
Live on stage, Hazel Brugger is known for her poker face, which she doesn't lose even when improvising. She manages to switch topics between scenes from everyday life and big politics with ease. She fascinates the audience again and again with a successful mixture of malice, quick wit and impressive knowledge of human nature.
