Success and longevity do not necessarily have to go hand in hand in the music business. In an industry of fast songs, only the most consistent careers are counted in decades and when 40 years of continuity have accumulated, any demand is probably superfluous. Long-term success in show business is most clearly evident when the artist's career clearly outlives the series of awards. The Kastelruther Spatzen have received 5 x 'The Golden Tuning Fork' as well as several 'Crowns of Folk Music' and won the 'Grand Prix of Folk Music'. These 3 award shows are now TV history, but the Spatzen, on the other hand, are still at the zenith of success, as fresh as ever. Their 13 (!) Echos have long been entered into the great book of industry history and are considered an immutable measure of all things. 40 years of success, 40 years of continuity. Consistency in what they do, something that fans particularly value. Then, when the sea gets rougher, it's nice to have buoys to guide you.
44 years ago, the Kastelruther Spatzen released their first long-playing record. Black. Vinyl. Title: 'The girl with the extinguished eyes'. There was a cassette version for the Walkman. Music cassettes are sold off at flea markets these days, but vinyl is currently experiencing a glorious revival. In any case, the original title of the first album was 'Have fun and enjoy'. Each sparrow contributed a song, all the other songs were written by Albin Gross. The Schlern can be seen in the background on the cover. The Dolomite mountain is a landmark of the region. The Schlern was chosen by the Spatzen because they thought the mountain was more famous than the band. 40 years later, it is fair to say that the popularity of the mountain and the band are balanced.
The first album was a success and since then they have received the awards they deserve every year. Gold, platinum, double platinum and so on. It would be too much to list them all here. The awards are traditionally presented at the Spatzenfest. Every year in October the Spatzen and their fans celebrate a three-day get-together in Kastelruth. The term 'festival' is a complete understatement. 15,000 happy people in the largest marquee tent in Europe... indescribable. Something like that can only be experienced in person. The Spatzenfest is a story in itself and an essential part of the past 46 years.
