“It seems to me that the age-old superstition that wealth grants happiness seems to be dissolving.” Well, Leo Tolstoy once said that, but he died seven years before the beginning of the Soviet Union. Nikita Miller is sure: If the guy had lived a little longer, he definitely wouldn't have said that.
When Nikita came to Germany from Ukraine with his parents at the age of five, he had to realize over the years: A person can perhaps leave the Soviet Union, but the Soviet Union can never leave the person. No wonder that after years of rigorously copying the Duden, Nikita's grandfather still doesn't speak a word of German.
The expectations of the West were great, the possibilities seemed endless. But Nikita Miller understood: Sitting between two cultures is terribly exhausting. The family tugs on one side, the new life on the other. So he worked diligently in his mental laboratory, mixing something up here and there, taking something out there and sprinkling a little glitter over it.
He mixed the best of German and Soviet and learned to love and appreciate both cultures with all their beauty and diversity, with all their quirks and inconveniences. Because we all have to admit to ourselves: cultures are not that different. Pelmeni are just little dumplings.
