John Davidson (Scott Ellis Watson) wächst in einer schottischen Kleinstadt Anfang der 1980er Jahre auf und entwickelt mit zwölf Jahren ausgeprägte Nerventicks. Was erst Jahre später als Tourette-Syndrom diagnostiziert wird, bestimmt fortan seinen Alltag. Weder im schulischen Umfeld noch im eigenen Zuhause gelten die unkontrollierten Bewegungen und spontanen Ausrufe als medizinische Symptome, stattdessen reagiert man mit Spott oder Strafen. Rund 15 Jahre später lebt John (Robert Aramayo) noch immer bei seiner Mutter (Shirley Henderson) und kämpft mit den Nebenwirkungen starker Medikamente. Eine zufällige Begegnung mit seinem früheren Klassenkameraden Murray sowie dessen Mutter Dottie (Maxine Peake) verändert seine Situation. Als Krankenschwester begegnet sie ihm mit Verständnis, nimmt ihn in ihre Familie auf und vermittelt ihm eine Anstellung als Assistent des Hausmeisters Tommy (Peter Mullan) im örtlichen Gemeindezentrum. Zwischen den beiden entwickelt sich eine enge Freundschaft, durch die John schrittweise mehr Zuversicht gewinnt und beginnt, seinen eigenen Weg zu gehen.
