Halberstadt in the summer of 1990. Maren, Robert and Volker have known and loved each other since childhood. It was more by chance that they found the millions of East Germans in an old shaft that had been stored there to rot.
The three smuggle out backpacks full of money. Together with their friends and neighbors, they develop an ingenious system to exchange the now worthless money for goods and outwit the invading Westerners and their capitalism. Because if you're a little clever, this summer can be not only a great adventure, but also the final turning point in your life.
