If you had to break down the essence of Tokio Hotel into one quality that connects Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav at its core, that defines them, sets them apart from others and that has also become their main driver, their absolute motivator over the years , then it is the irrepressible will to constantly rediscover yourself. So 2023 could rightly be described as the band’s “most Tokyo-hotel-y” year in a long time. Because boy oh boy have the boys discovered new worlds this year, conquered them and successfully rammed their flag into the rocks on their highest peaks and let it blow in the wind! It was a year of firsts for Tokio Hotel - and that's saying something for a band that has been around for over 20 years
and that too with the original line-up since its founding in 2001. “We have never had so much creative output and say before,” says Bill and then adds: “And we have never had as much fun with our career as we do now.” But first things first. This didn't all just happen in a vacuum.
When asked what era Tokio Hotel is in in 2023, he answers enthusiastically: "At an all-time high! It is probably the most exciting phase of our career because we have more freedom than ever before. Everything is possible!" Everything is and WAS possible! A brief summary of what Tokio Hotel have been up to in the last few months: First there was the extensive (and sold-out) European tour. The twins' podcast established itself as one of the most successful German podcasts in 2023. In November, Bill and Tom recorded a live episode in the Elbphilharmonie - something that had never happened before! Since September 2023, Bill and Tom have been sitting as judges on "The Voice of Germany" and are keeping
We realize why the whole world actually fell in love with the two of them in the first place: because they are simply damn stars. 2023 is the year in which Germany finally recognizes this and gives the band the love they always deserved. In 2023, Tokio Hotel managed to move from “Most Controversial” to “Everybody's Darling”. Finally! But how do the boys actually perceive this change? “It feels like we've thrown off a heavy backpack,” says Bill, describing the new mode. “We have opened up. It started with my biography and especially our podcast turned everything on its head. People are finally getting to know us properly.” Of course it feels great – to finally be recognized and appreciated for who you are. But – and Bill adds with a smile: “Still, we never want to be everyone's darling! I
I think if people completely stopped being upset with us, then I would know something was wrong!”
That's right, because then somehow it wouldn't be a Tokio Hotel anymore. Nevertheless: Thanks to this transformation in terms of acceptance and popularity, Tokio Hotel was able to play a festival summer in addition to their own tour in 2023 for the first time in their career. And speaking of iconic concerts that were long overdue: Another dream that came true for the band in 2023 was their appearance as the main act at Christopher Street Day. If that's not healing, then we really don't know what to do next!
Tour, festivals, CSD, podcast, The Voice – no wonder the band’s socials also exploded in 2023. Bill, Tom, Gustav and Georg managed to quadruple their following within a few months and become TikTok stars, especially in South America. This was immediately rewarded with a nomination at the TikTok Awards. Whether the band takes home the prize in the end, which is still in Los Angeles, Berlin, Magdeburg and everywhere in between, doesn't really matter in the end. Because Tokio Hotel 2023 won anyway. Point.
With all the hype, shows, concerts, content and interviews, some people may be wondering: But what about the music? To which the boys would reply: Mouse, don't worry! And there's even been some new music! In November, Tokio Hotel released their first Christmas single ever, “Your Christmas”. Well, that's something! Because planning hugely into the future is something that goes against a band like Tokio Hotel, who always see their strength more in feeling than in calculation. “I'm happy when I know what I'm going to do the next day, where I have to be and get it done well,” says Bill with a laugh when asked where he sees the band in five years. “Especially because this year has completely overwhelmed us, I don't want to give any predictions for the future. The most important thing is to stay with us and keep having fun. After so many years as a band, it is our privilege and greatest asset to only want to do what we feel like doing. This year we fell in love with making music again - it wasn't like that for a long time. We're in love with our careers, with the stages again." And then Bill gives a little insight into what the band's near future could look like: "We're up for features, up for trying out new things, surprising and challenging ourselves musically. “You notice it
already: It smells like change at Tokio Hotel again - what else?!
