Dort lebt er seit dem Tod seiner Frau alleine in einer Hütte und versucht seinen Kindern klarzumachen, dass das auch funktioniert. Jeff und Emily sehen natürlich, dass die (Un-)Ordnung in der Wohnung eine andere Sprache spricht. Timothea (Cate Blanchett )und Lilith (Vicky Krieps) machen sich nach Dublin auf, um dort ihre Mutter (Charlotte Rampling) zu besuchen. Und obwohl die beiden längst erwachsen sind und eigene Leben führen, leiden die Schwestern immer noch unter dieser erdrückend dominanten Figur. In Paris müssen die Zwillinge Skye (Indya Moore) und Billy (Luka Sabbat) die Wohnung der bei einem Flugzeugabsturz ums Leben gekommenen Eltern auflösen. Der Blick in alte Fotoalben lässt den beiden schließlich klarwerden, wie fremd ihnen die eigenen Eltern ihr ganzes Leben lang eigentlich waren...
