Der Zweite Weltkrieg ist vorüber, Nazideutschland geschlagen und nun soll den obersten Faschisten, die man noch lebend zu fassen bekam, der Prozess in Nürnberg gemacht werden. Vor dem extra zu diesem Zweck einberufenen Internationalen Militärgerichtshof angeklagt wird unter anderem Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe). Die Alliierten wollen den Prozess gegen ihn natürlich so wasserdicht wie nur irgend möglich führen und beauftragen somit den Psychiater Douglas Kelly (Rami Malek). Der soll abklopfen, ob Göring überhaupt prozesstauglich ist. Dabei bleibt es unumgänglich, dem Bösen direkt in die Augen zu blicken. Kelly besucht Göring also regelmäßig in seiner Zelle, um sich durch Gespräche ein Bild von ihm machen zu können. Dabei fällt es auch Kelly nicht immer leicht, das Charisma und manipulative Talent Görings einfach an sich abtropfen zu lassen. Doch das ist absolut notwendig, um die den bevorstehenden Prozess nicht zu gefährden...
