Stigers' greatest successes came in the early 1990s with the pop ballad "I Wonder Why", an international top ten hit (1991 US number 9, UK number 5, German number 8), and "You're All That Matters To Me" (1992, UK number 6). Both tracks were taken from his debut LP, Curtis Stigers (1991), which earned him multiple platinum awards all over the world. The album sold over one and a half million copies worldwide. He had another major success the following year with his interpretation of Nick Lowe's song "Peace, Love And Understanding" on the soundtrack to the film The Bodyguard. He was unable to build on this success with the album "Time Was" (1995). In an interview with the Neue Musikzeitung at the end of 2009, he recounted his experiences as a pop musician and the conflicts with the record company Arista: "They didn't care about the music at all. What mattered was the next hit, or what they thought it would be. At some point, I was only dealing with guys in suits who told me what music to sing."
