Der junge Michael Jackson (Juliano Krue Valdi) wird als achtes von zehn Kindern unter der strengen Führung seines Vaters Joe (Colman Domingo) früh für eine Musikkarriere gedrillt wird. Mit der Familienband Jackson Five feiert er erste Erfolge, im Alter von 13 Jahren startet er bereits die Solokarriere. Auch im Erwachsenenalter (Jaafar Jackson) ist sein Leben von der Musik dominiert. Ende der 1970er-Jahre lernt er bei Filmarbeiten Diana Ross (Kat Graham) und den Produzenten Quincy Jones (Kendrick Sampson) kennen, was seine musikalische Ausrichtung grundlegend verändert. Das von Jones produzierte Album "Off the Wall" (1979) wird ein großer Erfolg, der 1982 durch die bahnbrechende und meistverkaufte Platte "Thriller" noch übertroffen wird. Parallel zu diesem Aufstieg kommt es zum Bruch mit seinem Vater Joe, den Jackson als Manager entlässt und durch den Anwalt John Branca (Miles Teller) ersetzt.
