Was in den 90er-Jahren als ironisches gemeintes Schlagerprojekt unter Tübinger Freunden begann, entwickelte sich über Jahrzehnte zu einem generationsübergreifenden Kultphänomen: Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band. Im Sommer 2024 begleitet der Film die achtköpfige Band auf ihrer großen Open-Air-Tour quer durch Deutschland – vor Tausenden Fans mit Sonnenblumen, Glitzer und aufgeklebten Brusthaartoupets.
Mit unveröffentlichtem Archivmaterial, intensiven Live-Aufnahmen und intimen Backstage-Momenten erzählt „Und es war Sommer – Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band“ die Geschichte einer Band zwischen Euphorie, Erschöpfung und jahrzehntelanger Freundschaft. Der Film blickt zurück auf die ersten kleinen Auftritte Anfang der 90er, den unerwarteten Erfolg und ein Leben im Ausnahmezustand zwischen Tourbus, Konfetti und Schlagermedleys.
Im Mittelpunkt steht die enge Freundschaft zwischen Thomas Kuhn und Philipp Feldtkeller sowie die Frage, wie lange sich ein Leben auf der Bühne eigentlich durchhalten lässt. Eine warmherzige, komische und zugleich berührende Dokumentation über Musik, Freundschaft und die Kunst, das Leben leicht zu nehmen – auch wenn es schwer wird.
